For us, campus event programming is a major contributor to the culture and community that make up the University of Alabama. By planning and executing events designed by students of various classifications, majors, and communities, our on-campus reach can be broad, inclusive, and impactful. But at the end of the day, the most important thing to us is that students feel excited about and included in the events we host.
Our Mission
We create engaging events wheres all students feel welcome, find support, and build community.
What We Do
The vision of University Programs is to be the central location for all on-campus programming. We will share our resources with other campus departments, student organizations and community partners to assist them in the planning, promotion and implementation of their events. In addition, we will engage students through programs to play a more active role in their experience and education at the Capstone.
History
The University Program Council (UPC) was a student-run organization that played a major role in organizing big events, like concerts with artists such as Jimi Hendrix and The Rolling Stones and providing hands-on learning experiences for students. Members of UPC were involved in every aspect of event planning, from booking acts to managing tickets and security, which taught them valuable skills in business, communication, and teamwork. Many of these students used what they learned in UPC to succeed in their careers after college. The organization also created a strong sense of community among students and became a big selling point for the university, attracting people from across the region to campus.
Today, the spirit of UPC still impacts the University of Alabama. While the organization no longer exists in the same form, the hands-on experiences UPC offered are still emphasized through modern student organizations and events, such as those run by University Programs and other groups. These student-led activities continue to bring entertainment and community engagement to campus, just as UPC did. The skills learned through these programs help students prepare for their future careers, and like UPC’s legacy, these events continue to play a role in showcasing the university and attracting visitors and prospective students.
Our Events
Tied with the Tide
In conjunction with the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life, Tied with the Tide is a program for all students participating in early move in due to various activities to build community and learn about various resources at the Capstone.
Weeks of Welcome
Weeks of Welcome (WOW) is a large series of programs coordinated by University Programs to help first year and transfer students in their transition to academic and student life at the Capstone. These events are free and open to all UA students and serve as the university’s official welcome back to campus each fall semester.
UP Engage
This programming series features events four times per week during the fall and spring semesters. Our events are designed to help UA students find their place on campus, build community, and gain a broad understanding of the UA experience. These events are designed by students and focus on key engagement areas to provide a holistic experience for all students.
